NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Junior Claire Randich was selected as Atlantic 10 Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week after leading Butler to a 3-1 record last week. It is the first career weekly honor for the junior middle blocker from Joliet, Ill.
Randich led BU with 1.82 blocks per set as Butler went 2-1 at the Butler Classic. She started the tournament with six blocks while also hitting .389 in a 3-0 win over Western Illinois. After getting five blocks vs. Stephen F. Austin, Randich made nine stops (two solo) in a 3-1 win over Indiana.
She also had nine blocks with 11 kills on .381 hitting in a 3-2 win over IUPUI last Tuesday.
"Claire [Randich] had an outstanding weekend of play," Butler head coach Sharon Clark said. "Her blocking was a huge factor in our success this weekend. We are looking to her for even bigger things as the season continues. I'm thrilled for her to get this honor."
For the week, Randich led Butler with 1.81 blocks per set. She also had 2.19 kills per set and hit .303. As team, the Bulldogs had 54.5 blocks compared to 25.0 for their opponents.
Butler (7-3) will play four times this week, traveling to Wright State Tuesday night before hosting the Butler Invitational this weekend at Hinkle Fieldhouse.
