INDIANAPOLIS - Down 2-1, the Butler volleyball team fought back to capture a 3-2 win over Southeast Missouri State on Friday at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Junior Maggie Harbison led Butler with 17 kills, 17 digs and five blocks.
Butler improved to 9-3 on the season and has won five of its last six. The victory was also its third of the season when down in the match 2-1. BU is 4-0 this season when going five sets.
"We have enough experienced players on the floor to know what we're supposed to do when the match goes five," head coach Sharon Clark said. "And Morgan (Peterson) kicks it into a higher gear, and I think our team follows that lead."
With more than 1,000 screaming children in attendance, Butler started quickly with a 25-19 set win. The Bulldogs had 6.5 blocks team in the first set and appeared to be on their way to a fast win. However, SEMO bounced back to take the next two sets 25-20 and 25-18.
"We played well in stretches, but I thought we relaxed a bit and let them back in it," Clark said. "We have the talent, but need to cut down on some of our unforced errors."
Down 2-1, Clark made an adjustment by switching her outside hitters with the intention of getting more swings for Obert. BU went on to take the fourth set 25-20. The Redhawks started fast in the fifth, taking a 3-0 lead. After a Butler timeout, the Bulldogs were able to tie the set 5-5 on an Obert kill. Another Obert kill gave Butler a 6-5 lead. Butler didn't trail again and soon led 10-7. Two kills each down the stretch by Harbison and Randich clinched the deciding set 15-11.
"It was Claire who helped pull us through at the end," Clark noted.
The Bulldogs will continue Butler Invitational play Friday night vs. UC-Davis at 6 p.m.
