Bulldogs Swept 3-0 At Xavier

DAYTON, Ohio - The Butler volleyball team finished its first weekend of A-10 play with a 3-0 loss at Xavier. The Bulldogs will be at home against George Washington and Duquesne next weekend at Hinkle Fieldhouse.

"It was a rough loss for us," head coach Sharon Clark said. We lacked the toughness we needed today and simply didn't match Xavier's aggressiveness."

Sophomore Belle Obert had 10 kills and 10 digs to lead Butler, which was held to .039 hitting. In the loss, Clark lauded sophomore reserve Stephanie Kranda's performance.

"Steph was awesome off the bench today," Clark said. "She was the spark. But we needed others to step up and execute but it wasn't to be today. Xavier played very well and hit aggressively."

Kranda posted six kills on .455 hitting. She also had three digs.

Butler led 7-5 early before a 4-0 run gave XU the lead for good. The Musketeers (9-7, 2-0) added a couple big runs later in the set to win 25-17. Likewise, the second set was 3-3 before Xavier exploded to lead 17-5. The Musketeers ended up taking the set 25-11 and leading the match 2-0.

Xavier continued control, building a 16-9 lead in the third set. The Bulldogs rallied to within 17-14 but Xavier went back up 23-18. Two Bulldog attak errors were the final two points for the Musketeers.

XU's Sarah Brown had 15 kills on .324 hitting.

George Washington comes to Hinkle Friday, Sept. 28 at 7 p.m. There will be a tailgate party in the parking lot before the match.
