TUCSON, Ariz. – Butler finished the Arizona Classic on a high note by defeating the Eastern Kentucky Colonels by the final score of 3-0 on Saturday night. The Bulldogs cruised to an easy win in the first set, but they were forced to battle to end the match in three with a 25-22 win in the second followed by a 26-24 win in the finale.
Belle Obert hit .300 against the Colonels ending the match with a team-high 14 kills to go with 11 digs giving her a double-double performance. Stephanie Kranda was also a big factor offensively as she connected on nine of her 16 attempts to post a .375 attack percentage.
Alexis Plagens and Ashley Edmond were the bring spots offensively for Eastern Kentucky. Plagens tallied 11 kills and seven digs while Edmond ended the night with eight kills and four digs.
The first set belonged to Butler as the team dominated with a convincing 25-12 win, but the competition picked up in set two as the two teams played to a 20-20 tie in crunch time. Back-to-back attack errors gave Butler a slim margin and then the combination of Obert and Peterson took over the action to end the set at 25-22.
The third set was more close action as the teams ended up tied at 23-23. Obert broke the tie with a kill off the Peterson assist to get to match point. The Colonels weren't done as Edmond tied the game once again at 24-24. Obert was once again the focal point of the offense moving Butler to a one-point lead and the match ended shortly after as Eastern Kentucky recorded an attack error to give Butler the 3-0 win.
Butler will return to action with a home match against Wright State on Tuesday, Sept. 10. Action inside the Hinkle Fieldhouse will begin at 7 p.m.
