INDIANAPOLIS – The Bulldogs improved to 10-2 on the year with a 3-0 win over Green Bay in the opening match of the Butler Classic (25-19, 25-14, 25-21). The team will return to the court tonight at 7 p.m. to play UT Martin.
Butler was efficient in the opener posting attack percentages of .355, .500, and .314 against the Phoenix. The team recorded 41 kills while only making six errors. Belle Obert led the team with 10 kills and middle blocker Erica Stahl was close behind with 9. Both Stahl and setter Morgan Peterson posted a .500 attack percentage to lead Butler to victory.
A series of scoring runs helped Butler defeat Green Bay in the opening set as the team broke an 8-8 tie to take a 12-8 advantage. Moments later, a 3-0 run would give the team an 18-14 lead. The Phoenix never gave up as they fought back to get within three at 22-19, but the surge was over for Green Bay as the Bulldogs scored the final three points of the set to earn the 25-19 win.
Peterson came out very aggressive in the first set going for five kills and six assists. Brooke Ruffolo also did her part by setting the tone defensively with seven digs.
Set two was the most lop-sided encounter between the two teams as Butler raced out to a 3-0 lead which would turn into a 25-14 win. The 'Dogs once again closed out the match with a scoring spree as they took a 2-0 edge into the break. Stahl, Obert and Kelly Kyle provided the team with an offensive lift in the second set as the team used a .500 team attack percentage to grab a quick win.
The third and final set of the opening match was more of the same for Butler as the team never trailed on their way to a 25-21 win. A 6-0 run moved the score to 14-6 and the Phoenix were unable to recover as Butler earned the win after a kill from Obert.
