INDIANAPOLIS – The Butler volleyball team swept Toledo 3-0 on Saturday night to win the 2013 Butler Classic (25-21, 25-18, 25-16). Morgan Peterson was named Tournament MVP for the Bulldogs as she ended the weekend with her fifth double-double of the season.
"It feels great to win the Butler Classic," Head Coach Sharon Clark explained. "I think it's a perfect ending to our non-conference schedule as the team has worked really hard to get to this point."
Joining Peterson on the All-Tournament team was outside hitter Belle Obert and middle blocker Erica Stahl. Obert led the team in kills against Toledo with 13 and she tied Stahl for the team lead in blocks with seven. The Bulldogs controlled the net against the Rockets as they recorded 14.5 team blocks in the three-set match.
"Our goal for tonight was 15 blocks, which is huge, so I will take 14.5," Clark stated. "We did a great job tracking the ball and our middle blockers busted their tails and it showed in their performance."
Peterson earned MVP honors for her outstanding play in all three matches over the weekend, but Saturday night was arguably her best game as she led the team with 34 assists and 12 digs. Peterson continues to prove that she is an all-around player as she also added six kills and two blocks.
"Morgan [Peterson] was on-point this weekend," Clark added. "Her set selection was good, she did a great job defensively, and she was near the team lead in digging balls. She ran the team like we need her to and it showed this weekend."
Senior Maggie Haribson was yet another Bulldog stuffing the stat sheet as she ended the Toledo match with a team-high three service aces, eight kills and five blocks.
The opening set was close until a 6-0 Butler run pushed the score to 19-12. Stahl and Kelly Kyle impacted the scoring spree as the Bulldogs sprinted to the finish line to take the 1-0 lead.
Another 6-0 scoring run led Butler to victory in set two as the Bulldogs broke a 14-14 tie to take control of the action. Toledo burned a timeout to stop the momentum but junior Stephanie Kranda stepped up to the challenge for Butler to lead the team to a 25-18 win.
The third and final set featured a tied game three times early on in the action, but the Rockets would never take the lead as Butler held a 15-9 advantage at the midway point. Obert exploded for six kills in the finale, including the game-winner off an assist by Peterson.
The Bulldogs are now 12-2 overall heading into the BIG EAST opener against Xavier on Friday, Sept. 27. Butler will host the Musketeers at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
