Volleyball Ends Weekend with 3-0 Sweep over DePaul
INDIANAPOLIS – The Butler volleyball team improved to 19-6 overall with a 3-0 victory over the DePaul Blue Demons on Saturday night (25-22, 25-17, 25-11). The win moves Butler to 6-4 in the BIG EAST conference with six matches remaining in the regular season.
Morgan Peterson posted 40 assists, five digs, three kills, one block and one service ace on Saturday to help Butler defeat DePaul in straight sets. She set up the offensive evenly as the team ended the night with a .377 attack percentage.
Stephanie Kranda, Maggie Harbison and Belle Obert all recorded a double figure kill total as Kranda led the team with 11 to hit at a .360 clip. Harbison and Obert served the ball extremely well posting nine combined aces. Harbison led the team with five and Obert did her part with four.
The defensive effort was once again led by Brooke Ruffolo who recorded 17 digs against the Blue Demons. Harbison played good defense at the net as she led the team with three blocks.
The first set was by far the most competitive as DePaul came out with a 14-12 lead in the opener. A 6-0 Butler run quickly changed the scene as they grabbed an 18-14 lead, but the Blue Demons got back within a point at 21-20. Kranda's kill gave Butler a small cushion, but it was the serve of Harbison that buried the Demons as she recorded back-to-back aces to push Butler to set point. The set ended with a kill from Erica Stahl giving Butler the 1-0 lead.
An 8-0 Butler run was the story of the second set as the Bulldogs controlled the action with a 19-8 advantage. Morgan Peterson helped Butler pull away as her serve played a large part in the scoring run. Attack errors got DePaul back into the game, but Kranda was too strong down the stretch as she finished off DePaul 25-17 with her fifth kill of the set to give Butler a 2-0 lead heading into the break.
Set three didn't last long as Butler jumped out to a 13-3 lead. Obert and Harbison served for a majority of the points as Mary Striedl, Harbison and Kranda sent kills down to the hardwood. This set was never close as Butler cruised to a 25-11 win to earn their 19th victory of the season.
The Bulldogs will return to action with a match on Nov. 9 at Villanova. The weekend will come to a close with a 4 p.m. match at Georgetown on Nov. 10.
