VILLANOVA, Pa. – The Butler volleyball team is now 20-6 overall after recording a 3-0 sweep over Villanova on Saturday night (25-7, 25-18, 25-17). The Bulldogs dominated the opening set to take control of the action as the team now moves to 7-4 in BIG EAST competition.
The trio of Maggie Harbison, Belle Obert and Erica Stahl led the Bulldogs offensively on Saturday recording 10, nine, and eight kills respectively. Harbison and Stahl were great up the middle as they each hit over .500 for the night. Morgan Peterson once again set up the action with a match-high 32 assists.
The defensive unit was also led by three players as Brooke Ruffolo, Kristen Webb, and Mary Striedl all reached a double figure dig count. Ruffolo and Webb shared the team lead with 12 while Striedl was close behind with 10.
The Bulldogs hit .376 as a team compared to .037 from the Wildcats. Team blocks also favored Butler as the 'Dogs sent back eight attacks compared to just two for Nova.
Despite playing on the road, the Bulldogs came out firing on all cylinders in set one to open up a 7-1 lead. That gap grew to 20-5 after a kill from Stephanie Kranda and Harbison would end it at 25-7 with a kill off the Peterson assist.
The second set was more of the same action as Butler got off to a 5-1 lead before jumping out to a 17-10 cushion. The Wildcats used a timeout at 19-12, but a string of attack errors down the stretch allowed Butler to move up 2-0 in the match.
Villanova got off to a better start in the third and final set, but a 6-0 run by Butler pushed the lead to 16-6. Attack errors from the Wildcats would once again hurt their chances of moving the match to a fourth set as Kranda sent the final kill of the night to the hardwood to reach eight on the night.
Butler will look to keep this momentum heading into tomorrow as the team plays at Georgetown on Sunday at 4 p.m.
