BIG EAST Announces Volleyball All-Conference Teams
NEW YORK – The BIG EAST office has recognized Belle Obert and Erica Stahl as First Team All-BIG EAST performers for the 2013 season. Senior setter Morgan Peterson was also honored as she was selected to the All-BIG EAST Second Team.
Marquette captured three of the four conference individual awards as senior setter Elizabeth Koberstein was named BIG EAST Player of the Year, freshman outside hitter Autumn Bailey was selected BIG EAST Freshman of the Year and the Marquette coaches were named BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year. Alyssa Warren of Seton Hall was named BIG EAST Libero of the Year.
Award recipients were selected by a vote of the league's head coaches who were not permitted to vote for their own players. The awards were announced prior to the BIG EAST Championship which will be held Nov. 29-30 on the campus of Creighton University in Omaha, Neb. Four teams will participate in the tournament. No. 1 seed Marquette will meet No. 4 seed Butler. No. 2 seed Creighton will battle No. 3 seed Xavier.
Obert, Stahl and Peterson were instrumental to the amount of success that Butler reached during the 2013 season. Obert, the team's point leader, recorded 372 kills, 227 digs, 117 blocks, 23 service aces and 28 assists during the regular season. She has taken more swings (1,063) than any other Bulldogs and still hits at a .270 clip.
The California native has 462 points on the year giving her a career total of 1,049. Obert is nationally ranked in three categories as she enters the weekend ranked 76th in points per set (4.24), 133rd in kills per set (3.41) and 157th in blocks per set (1.07).
Obert has recorded six double-double performances this season with arguably her best game of the year coming vs. IUPUI when she recorded 20 kills and 17 digs to help BU defeat the Jaguars. Her season-high dig total of 21 also came in a double-double effort as she added 10 kills at Xavier.
Obert made the all-tournament team in all four tournaments that Butler participated in during the early part of the 2013 schedule. She took home MVP honors opening weekend at the Cincinnati Invite and was also recognized at the Arizona Classic. Peterson was an impact player during each home tournament as she was named to the All-Tournament Team in the Butler Invite and the Butler Classic.
The Bulldogs placed two players on the All-BIG EAST First Team as junior Erica Stahl played at a very high level for Butler throughout the season. A Preseason All-BIG EAST selection, Stahl earned her spot on the postseason team by leading Butler in blocks with 151. Stahl plays as the backbone of the Butler net defense which has been nationally ranked in the top ten in blocks per set for the entire season.
Stahl is more than capable of making plays on the offensive side of the floor as a middle blocker as she enters the weekend with 207 kills, hitting at a .313 clip. She is currently ranked 20th in the NCAA with a blocks per set average of 1.39. She also comes in nationally ranked with her .313 attack percentage.
Stahl earned BIG EAST Player of the Week honors on Oct. 28 by recording two double-double performances in wins over Seton Hall and St. John's. For the week, Stahl recorded 22 kills and 22 blocks while hitting .381.
The final Bulldog to earn post-season recognition from the BIG EAST was senior setter Morgan Peterson. The multi-talented Peterson posted an impressive stat line with 1,067 assists, 278 digs, 148 kills, 78 blocks and 19 service aces during the regular season.
Peterson was honored as the BIG EAST Player of the Week on Oct. 7 when she helped the Bulldogs post three wins over BIG EAST opponents by recording 95 assists, 21 kills, 13 digs, six blocks and two service aces.
The team leader in double-doubles, Peterson has accomplished the feat 11 times. She posted 56 assists and 18 digs vs. IUPUI and recently went for 43 assists and 22 digs at Marquette.
Peterson is nationally ranked 123rd in assists per set (9.97) and she was honored as an All-Tournament Team selection both in the Cincinnati Invitational and at home in the Butler Classic where she took MVP honors.
