Volleyball Claims Season-Opener Over Marian, 3-1

Aug. 25, 2006

Box Score

Indianapolis, Ind. - Butler used stifling defense and consistent offensive performances to take down Marian College, 3-1, at the Marian PE Building on Friday (August 25).

The Bulldogs claimed the opener, 30-19, before Marian rallied late in the second contest to claim a 30-28 win. Butler, however, would shut down the Knights' attacks in the final two frames, never trailing in claiming 30-17 and 30-14 victories.

Freshman outside hitter Porshia Allen posted a break-out offensive showing, pacing the Bulldogs with 21 kills, while junior middle Michelle DeGeeter (13 kills) and senior middle Krystal Hendrix (nine) added strong offensive showings down the stretch.

Sophomore setter Dana Daprile, in her first action since a season-ending knee injury in 2005, showed no signs of a let down, dishing-out 51 assists in the game.

"This was a good start to our season," head coach Sharon Clark said. "We were able to play everyone in this match and give our young players some good court time.

"We hit pretty well, but I was most impressed with our scrappiness on defense. Marian is a very aggressive team. They served very well, and it took us a little time to get control of our passing, but once we did, our hitters picked us up."

The win gives Clark the 197th win of her 14-year career and her 95th win as the head coach of the Bulldogs.

Butler welcomes Chicago State to Hinkle Fieldhouse for the home opener on Tuesday (August 29) beginning at 6:00 p.m.
