Coral Gables, Fla. - Freshman Jessica Wolfe registered her second double-double in just the third match of her collegiate career and sophomore Porshia Allen added double-figure kills, but host Miami benefited from four players with double-digit kill totals in earning a 30-21, 26-30, 30-28, 30-23 decision in the final match of the Orange and Green Challenge on Saturday (August 25).
With the loss, Butler falls to 1-2 on the season, while the Hurricanes improve to 2-1.
The Bulldogs found themselves in an early hole after dropping the opening game but came back to claim victory in game two. Trailing 26-25, Butler reeled off five-straight points, including a service ace by Dana Daprile and a kill by Michelle DeGeeter, to tie the match at 1-1.
The Butler offense sprung to life in the third game, topping the Hurricanes in kills 20-16, but Miami maintained the lead throughout the match and held on down the stretch.
Miami put Butler down early in the fourth match before the Bulldogs regrouped to bring the game back even at 20-20. They would get no closer, however, as the Hurricanes used a 7-2 run to push ahead and clinch the match.
Wolfe, coming off back-to-back 18-kill performances and her first collegiate double-double earlier in the day against Hofstra, again paced the offense with a team-high 14 kills and added 12 digs. Allen joined Wolfe in double digits with 13 kills of her own.
Junior Nina Inic continued her early-season consistency in the back with a team-high 20 digs, while sophomore Brittany Awai notched her first double-double as a Bulldog with a team-high 20 assists and 10 digs.
"We played really well and battled the whole time we were out there in both matches today," head coach Sharon Clark said, "but I think our lack of experience caught up with us. We had some strong offensive performances again; we were a little out of synch on the defensive end at times."
Thanks in large part to her career performance against Hofstra in the first match on Saturday, Allen earned a spot on the Orange and Green Challenge All-Tournament Team. Allen finished the weekend with 41 kills, including 26 kills against the Pride at a .444 clip (26 kills, 2 errors, 54 attempts).
Butler returns to action on Tuesday (August 28) when it heads to Cincinnati, Ohio for a 7:00 p.m. match against Xavier at the Cintas Center. The Bulldogs then return home to Hinkle Fieldhouse on Friday (August 31) when they open up the 2007 Butler Invitational.
