Junior Kali Carter led a balanced Butler attack as the Bulldogs defeated Samford in five games to open the New Orleans/Wyndham-Metairie Invitational. The 30-19, 25-30, 30-19, 28-30, 15-9 victory gives the 1-0 Bulldogs momentum heading into the second match of the four-team, round robin tournament.
Carter led the Bulldogs with 23 kills, while hitting .267 (23-7-60) for the match. She was one of three Bulldogs to record a double-double, as she added 11 digs. Senior Amanda Matthews recorded 47 assists and 12 digs, while sophomore Megan Knightly had 16 kills and 15 digs. Knightly led Butler by hitting .343 (16-4-35).
As a team, the Bulldogs had 71 kills to Samford's 60. Butler also won the blocking battle 15-5 and recorded ten aces. Kristin Berryman (16 kills and 12 digs) and Krista Kettering (50 assists and 14 digs) led the Samford effort with double-doubles.
Ten Bulldogs saw action in the five-game thriller. Eight of those players appeared in all five games. Depth is going to be needed as the Bulldogs turn around and play Southeastern Louisiana Saturday morning at 10 a.m. and then play host New Orleans at 7 p.m. in the evening. SELU knocked off the host Privateers 3-0 in Friday's play.
