Indianapolis, Ind. - A late match rally by the Bulldogs in the final match of the Butler Invitational came up short of a comeback, as Northern Illinois hung on for a 30-22, 30-25, 28-30, 30-24 decision at Hinkle Fieldhouse on Saturday (Sept. 1). Butler was unable to solve Utah Valley in the opening match of the day, as the Wolverines claimed a 34-32, 30-18, 30-20 victory.
After the Huskies handed the Bulldogs a pair of defeats in the first two games of the evening match, Butler responded in the third with a gutsy showing in the third, holding off several NIU charges in taking the win.
Butler again hung tough in the fourth match, trimming a five-point deficit to one at 22-21 before the Huskies used a 7-1 run late to claim the clinching decision.
Sophomore Porshia Allen put together two solid matches for the Bulldogs, registering a pair of double-doubles with a team-high 12 kills and 10 digs against Utah Valley before tallying 15 and 13 digs against the Huskies. Senior Michelle DeGeeter added 15 kills and 16 digs against NIU.
Junior Nina Inic paced the squad in digs in both contests, tallying 24 against UVU and 19 against NIU.
Following the final match against Northern Illinois, both Allen and DeGeeter were honored as members of the six-player all-tournament team.
The Bulldogs return to action next weekend when they head to the West Virginia Volleyball Classic on Sept. 7.
