The Bulldogs defeated Northern Illinois Saturday night in the final match of the Comfort Inn and Suites Inviational in DeKalb, Ill. Butler's Kali Carter led the visitors with 23 kills in the 30-23, 30-24, 19-30, 13-30, 15-9 decision. With the win, the Bulldogs improve to 1-2 on the season, while the Huskies fall to 1-3.
Butler raced out to an early 2-0 lead behind .326 and .359 hitting percentages in the first two games. The host Huskies then responded with two impressive games before the Bulldogs regrouped and won the fifth game by not committing a single hitting error.
Senior Areal Bienemy added 20 kills for the Bulldogs, while junior Megan Knightly had a team-high 19 digs. Senior setter Sara Gallagher helped out with 46 assists. For Northern Illinois, Tera Lobdell had a match-high 29 kills. Carter and Bienemy finished the Invitational with "All-Tournament Team" recognition.
"We're excited to notch our first win," said assistant coach Karen Weatherington. "This is a great road win for us. Kali and Areal turned in great performances. It was a great effort by everyone."
The Bulldogs return to action Tuesday at Dayton. That match is set for 7 p.m. Butler opens the home campaign Friday against Western Illinois in the Butler Invitational, presented by Wyndham Hotels.
