WEST LAFAYETTE, IND. - Western Kentucky kept its perfect record intact with a three-game win over Butler on Friday (Sept. 6) at the Mortarboard Purdue Premiere. The Lady Toppers defeated the Bulldogs 30-26, 30-13 and 30-10 while improving to 6-0 on the season. Butler fell to 2-3 with the loss.
The Bulldogs took a 7-2 early lead in game one, and maintained the advantage throughout until Crystal Towler's kill tied the game at 18. The two teams would battle it out for every point down the stretch, but Jessie Wagner's back-to-back kills at crucial moments, gave the Lady Toppers the 30-26 win.
Western Kentucky's momentum from its game one win would carry over into the second frame, as the Lady Toppers burst out to a 12-1 lead. WKU, which hit an impressive .524 (12-1-21) on the game, limited the Bulldogs to a .107 (9-6-28) clip while cruising to a 30-13 victory.
The Lady Toppers continued to dominate in game three as an 8-3 lead quickly turned into an 20-7 advantage. The Bulldogs only managed three more points from there on out, as they fell 30-10 to the reigning Sun Belt Champion. Western Kentucky again posted an outstanding offensive performance, hitting .480 as a team, while Butler hit a dismal -.259 on the game.
Wagner led all hitters with 12 kills while teammate Lyndsey Broerman added 10. Senior setter Sara Noe dished out a match-high 38 assists and Tracy May added 11 digs.
On the match, WKU hit .379 as a team, while Butler hit a season-low .094.
The Bulldogs will take on Delaware (0-3) in the tournament's afternoon session.
